MOUNT OLIVE -- Despite winning its fifth Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference championship and posting wins over the top two teams in the region, Mount Olive came up short in its bid for a trip to the South Atlantic Regional in the 2004 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship.

Selections were announced early this morning.

Mount Olive (37-15) was ranked No. 4 in each of the first three regional polls, including the poll immediately following its CVAC Tournament championship. The Trojans defeated then-No. 1 Pfeiffer 10-6 in the title game. In the final regular season poll, Mount Olive dropped to No. 5 in the poll, despite not having played since winning the conference tournament.

Only the top four teams in the region advance to post-season play. Conference champions do not receive an automatic bid to the baseball championship.

North Florida is the No. 1 seed and will play host to the regional in Jacksonville, Fla. Pfeiffer is the No. 2 seed, followed by No. 3 Columbus State and No. 4 Augusta State. Columbus State jumped from No. 5 to No. 3 in the final regular season poll.

The South Atlantic Regional gets underway Thursday with winner advancing to the national finals May 22-29 at Montgomery, Ala.

Mount Olive split a two-game series with No. 1 North Florida in March and went 2-2 against No. 2 Pfeiffer during the season, including the win in the championship game of the conference tournament.
