Goldsboro '87 Sting-Navy soccer reaches Kepner semis

STATESVILLE -- The Goldsboro '87 Sting-Navy soccer team won four games last weekend at the Kepner State Cup and advanced to the semifinal round to be played May 22 in Greensboro.
The Sting played their first game against Rowan Rage and defeated them by a score of 4-1. In the second game, Goldsboro defeated CASL United 3-2. In the third game, the Sting defeated Wilson Explosion 2-0, and in the quarterfinals, they defeated the Charlotte Eagles 3-0.
Golsdboro is scheduled to play the top-seeded Iredell Rowdies in the semifinals with a possible berth in the championship against either OSCSA Coastal Crew or CVYSA Blast.
Heading into the tournament, there were 22 teams from all over the state participating in the '87 division of the Kepner State Cup.
Erik Rivera led the way with four goals during the tournament, while Eric Bourgeois and Dustin Smith had two goals each. Jin Lee, Jorge Gutierrez, Luis Ramirez and Leonardo Marrero had one goal each.
Goalie Titto Margarito, along with Jorge Ramirez, Jonathan Stutts, Eric Jorgenson, Oscar Suncin, Joel Sullivan, Triston Hooks and Li Vanson were applauded for their defensive effort by coach Dave Bourgeois.
Two weeks prior to playing in the State Cup, the Sting won the Division II title to advance to Division I next season by defeating the Wilson Explosion 2-0.
The team is now 13-2-1 on the season.
