Aycock's Williams throws three-hit shutout

WINTERVILLE -- C.B. Aycock's Adam Williams tossed a complete game, three-hitter, while the Golden Falcons scored their only run in the third inning and made it stand up for a 1-0 decision.

The win denied South Central (12-9-1, 10-5 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference) a chance to lock down a N.C. High School Athletic Association playoff spot. Aycock (15-7 overall) improved to 8-6 in the ECC with a huge match-up at home against Eastern Wayne slated for Tuesday.

Both the Falcons and Warriors have identical conference marks and are tied for third.

South Central's Chris Camp and Brandon Brown each singled in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Bill Hopkins stepped up and drove a pitch from Williams to the deepest part of left-center field. However, Aycock's Jared Gouty had enough room to record the last out of the frame.

"When (Hopkins) hit it, I thought it had a shot," Langston said. "Then, when I saw the left-fielder stop, I said, 'It's not going to make it.'"

Aycock got three consecutive men on base to score its only run. Matthew Waddell fouled off several pitches from South Central's Matt Scoggin before singling to right with two outs. After Nik Pappas drew a walk, Josh Pate dropped another single into right, pushing home Waddell.

"This was a typical ECC game late in the season," Aycock coach Charles Davis said. "To win on the road at South Central is huge after them beating us here. The kids are just focused and we did what we had to do to win."

Williams retired the last seven South Central hitters he faced to get the shutout. Williams walked one and struck out eight.

"He threw a heck of a ball game. We played some great defense behind him also," Davis said. "Bennett Jeffreys did an excellent job behind the plate. I didn't call a single pitch all night, and they worked together. Bennett did a great job of blocking balls."

Scoggin allowed four hits while going all seven innings.
