Aycock girls soccer gains share of ECC 3-A title

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock senior Jessie Lamb tallied a hat trick (three goals) in the first half as the Golden Falcons closed out the regular season with a 10-0 win at home against South Central on Friday on their senior night.

The win boosted Aycock's record to 13-4 overall and 10-2 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference -- good for a first-place tie with Washington and West Carteret.

It marked the Golden Falcons' first-ever conference crown in soccer.

The three schools broke the tie by drawing numbers. The Falcons drew the top seed and will receive a first-round bye in the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs. Aycock plays the winner of Kinston's match at the Five County Conference's number three seed later next week.

West Carteret drew second. Washington drew third.

"I think they are playing a good level of soccer. They are dishing it around evenly and doing the fundamental things that we want," Aycock coach John Fidler said. "They are coming together and playing like a team ... moving the ball around with give and goes."

Senior Mary Beth Hooks added a hat trick and one assist, and now has a team-high 16 goals on the season.

Sophomore Nicole Taylor scored twice. Freshmen Nida Waheed and Lizzie Sodoma had one goal each.

Aycock charged ahead 5-0 at halftime.

Sophomore goalie Emily Stewart and the Falcon defense turned in their 10th shutout of the season.

Hooks, Lamb, Cassidy Gray, Stephanie Speck, Paige Stewart, Angela Cecil, Rebecca Phillips and Christie Milleson -- all seniors -- played in their final regular-season home game for Aycock.
