Eastern Wayne dominated the relays and emerged the top girls team in the 2004 Wayne County Track and Field Championships contested Thursday afternoon at New Hope.

The Warriors, paced by Shelly Baker's twin victories in the hurdles, amassed 103 points. Charles B. Aycock ended up second with 88, followed by Southern Wayne and Goldsboro with 31 points apiece.

Meanwhile the Golden Falcon boys, sparked by Keith Cobb's two individual victories, eased past Eastern Wayne 95-88. The Saints finished third with 44.5 points, followed by the Cougars with 38.5.

Rosewood and Spring Creek did not attend the meet.

Baker ran the 100 high hurdles in 17.03 seconds and came back later in the day to win the 300 low hurdles in 55.0. Teammates April Vinson (800 run), Jamie Vogt (1,600) and Ashley Mewborn (400) each emerged victorious.

Eugenia Baker recorded a season-best time of 26.93 in the 200.

Campbell signee Liza Davis claimed the 3,200 run. Fellow Golden Falcons Artralia Williams (discus), Jovanne Holland (high jump) and Amy Fryt (pole vault) enjoyed success on a warm, sunny afternoon.

Goldsboro's Ashelyn James won the shot put.

Southern Wayne's Christy Dixon took the long jump (14 feet, 3/4 inches), triple jump (32-4 3/4) and 100 dash (13.01) seconds.

The Warriors swept the relays.

"It was a great meet," Eastern Wayne girls coach Marvin Bowman said. "Our relay teams have really been coming on the last couple of meets. We added Eugenia to the 800 and they've really improved."

Cobb ran the 100 dash in 11.25 seconds and took the 200 in 22.87. Teammates Shonte Barnes and Jamorris Dickerson grabbed the top spot in the shot put and high jump, respectively.

The Warriors' Michael Lawerence finished first in the 800 and 1,600 runs. Matt Interrante took first in the 3,200. Chris Campbell recorded mark of 37 feet, 4 1/2 inches in the triple jump.

Durrell Washington (110 hurdles) and Derrick Lathan (long jump) each picked up an individual win for the Saints.

Goldsboro's Jacob Sykes won the 400 run.

All four teams return to action May 8 in the season-ending Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference Track and Field Championships at West Carteret.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association eastern regionals are scheduled May 15 at Wilson Fike.
