Softball -- ND outslugs Princeton

CALYPSO -- North Duplin pushed three runs across in the bottom of the seventh inning and grabbed its first Carolina 1-A Conference win, 16-15 against Princeton on Tuesday.

The teams combined for 28 hits in the regulation seven-inning game.

"This became an offensive battle," Rebels coach Heather Best said. "Both teams went through their pitchers and the opponent figured out their timing. we hit the ball the best we have all season this game."

Julie Ivey, Bethany Malcolm, Marlyn Ball and April Tillman each rapped out two hits. Each player hit a double, while Malcolm and Tillman combined for six RBI.

Casey Pate emerged the winning pitcher in relief of starter Brittany Carr. Pate struck out two and allowed five runs (three earned) on three hits in one inning.

Lisa Thompson paced the Bulldogs with four hits, including a triple. Nicole Hargis batted 5-for-5, while Crystal Higgins contributed two singles in three at-bats.

North Duplin (2-15, 1-8 CC) travels to defending Carolina champion Ayden-Grifton on Thursday.
