Softball -- CBA's record still spotless

PIKEVILLE -- June of 2005 will not come soon enough for Kinston coach Donald Mooring.

That's when Charles B. Aycock softball player Jenny Jackson will graduate.

"Southern Wayne coach Brad Mathews and I can't wait to throw her a graduation party," said Mooring after Jackson and her teammates dropped the Lady Vikings 2-0 Tuesday night at the Falcon diamond.

The win gives Jackson a perfect 13-0 record on the year. Her team is 15-0 and 9-0 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play. Kinston's record falls to an even .500 mark in conference at 5-5.

Overall, the Lady Vikings are 10-6.

"To beat Aycock," continued Mooring, "you've got to beat Jenny. We got four hits, but we couldn't put them together. They don't make any mistakes. You've got to put the ball in play to beat them."

Jackson was extremely strong. She struck out the side on ten pitches to open the game. She retired eight batters in a row before Shannon Arnold struck out, but reached first base on a dropped third strike.

Ashkea Hines got the Vikings' first hit to lead off the fourth. After stealing second, she was cut down on another steal attempt by a perfect throw from catcher April Vick to third baseman Chrissy Setliff.

Kinston had only one other scoring threat. In the sixth, Danielle Bryant sent a shot down the third base line. Hines followed with a single. Centerfielder Brittany Edgarton's throw to Vick held Bryant at third. Jackson then struck out Kim Dixon to end the inning, one of thirteen K's on the night.

Aycock scored in the first inning. Edgerton led off with the first of her two singles. She went to second on a wild pitch, and third on a fielder's choice. She came home on Kandace Burroughs' sacrifice fly to right.

Kinston's Carla Davis held the Lady Falcons at bay for the next four innings. The senior recruit for Meredith College only allowed two hits, the second to Edgerton and a double to Jackson, until an insurance run was scored in the fifth.

Coach David West's first attempt to score failed when catcher Bailey Harrell, a Pitt Community College signee, grabbed Jackie Schmidt's suicide squeeze bunt and just caught Setliff as she slid across the plate. Burroughs singled in Edgerton, who had reached on an error.

"Carla has carried the load for us the last two years," said Mooring. "She's pitched every pitch in every one of our games over the last two years."

The Vikings' next game will be with South Central on Tuesday.

"We need to spend some money to bring the fences in to take advantage of Burroughs' hitting," said West. "She is a tremendous hitter, averaging around .415."

The Lady Falcons' next game will be Friday night at West Craven.
