Soccer -- Warriors fall in OT; Rosewood outlasts NJ

MOREHEAD CITY -- Eastern Wayne went up 3-1 with 22 minutes remaining on a goal by Natalie Taylor, but Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference leader West Carteret rallied to claim a 4-3 overtime win at home on Monday.

The loss puts the Lady Warriors (5-7 overall) at 5-5 in conference play, still firmly positioned in the fourth and final playoff spot with two games remaining. West Carteret (8-6) improved to 8-1 in the ECC with three games left.

The Warriors' Samantha Frazer opened the scoring four minutes into the match on an assist by Katy Biehl. Late in the first half, Taylor scored the first of her two goals to send EW into the half with a 2-0 lead.

"Going into halftime, I felt quite confident we could get a result in this match," Eastern Wayne coach Jorg Wagner said. "We were able to put solid midfield pressure on West Carteret and our forwards capitalized on two of their defensive breakdowns in the early going. "

After a goal by the Patriots, Taylor scored on an assist by Leanna Rothwell in the 68th minute as the Warriors went up 3-1.

The Patriots began their surge with goals in the 75th minute by Shivor Hammonds, who scored twice, and in the 82nd minute by Nancy Dawson, who tied the score at 3-3.

Dawson scored the game-winner in the first overtime period.

Eastern Wayne goalie Ashley Lish had 18 saves on the game, including a stop from point-blank range in the 95th minute.

Biehl, Rothwell and Christina Fanto were applauded for physical play in the central midfield are while defenders, Carol Reinier and Sarah Bacon turned in solid efforts in the back.

Eastern Wayne hosts West Craven on May 3 before concluding the regular season at home on May 5.

Narron's OT goal

boosts Eagles

Rosewood's Clare Narron scored seven minutes in the first overtime period on an assist from Rachel McCormick as the Eagles defeated a surging North Johnston 1-0 in overtime.

Rosewood (13-2, 9-1 Classes 2-A Eastern Plains/1-A Carolina/Super-Six) remains a 1/2 game ahead of North Lenoir for first place in the conference standings. The Eagles and Hawks duel on Wednesday in LaGrange.

North Johnston (10-8, 6-4 EPC/C/SS) hosts Southern Nash in a non-conference tilt on Friday.

Rosewood's defense led by Stacy Ellis, Kandis Weeks, Amber Rich and Mikayla Young were applauded for solid efforts in the shutout win.

Eagle goalie Molly Grantham had eight saves, including a save in the second overtime -- deflecting a Panther shot over the top of the goal in the second overtime.

"Our defense played great. Our marking backs picked up their two forwards, and midfielder Tiffany Price picked up the first person down," Rosewood assistant coach Brian Brewer said. "We just didn't give them a lot of opportunites to get going."

The Eagles outshot North Johnston 14-8.

Panther goalie Allison Hinnant also turned in a stout game in the goal for North Johnston.

"Some of the saves she made, kept it from being four or five to nothing," Panther coach Brent Walston said.
