Five Trojans receive CVAC honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Brian Corbett, Ricky Duke and Steve Parrish earned first-team honors, while Craig Hurba and Matt Rusch earned second-team honors on the NCAA Division II All-Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference baseball team, announced Friday at the CVAC baseball tournament.

Parrish, a senior from Fremont, was named first-team designated hitter. Parrish ranks in the top three in the CVAC in all three triple crown categories with a .415 batting average, 19 home runs and 70 RBI. He also ranks in the top 15 in the nation in home runs, RBI and slugging percentage (.847).

Parrish is one home run shy of tying the school single-season home run record.

Corbett and Duke were both named first-team starting pitchers.

Corbett, a junior from Marion, S.C., is 4-1 with a 3.76 earned run average. He is averaging 9.35 strikeouts per nine innings with 72 strikeouts in 69 1/3 innings pitched. Corbett is a two-time CVAC Pitcher of the Week.

Duke, a junior from Grove City, Ohio, entered this week tied for fifth in the nation in wins. He picked up his 10th win of the season Friday in the opening round of the CVAC tournament. Duke recorded a complete-game victory over nationally second-ranked North Florida.

Hurba, a senior from Maryland, N.Y., was named second-team catcher. He ranks in the top 20 nationally in home runs (16), runs batted in (72) and slugging percentage (.771). He ranks ninth in the CVAC in hitting with a .400 batting average, fourth in home runs and third in RBI. Hurba earned CVAC Player of the Week honors in March.

Rusch, a junior from Schenectady, N.Y., was named second-team relief pitcher. He has a record of 3-2 with a 4.14 ERA. Rusch has started in each of his last three appearances after coming out of the bullpen in his first 11 appearances of the season. Rusch was named CVAC Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 5-11.

Jeff Robbins of Pfeiffer was named CVAC Player of the Year, Shelton Cisson of Erskine was named Freshman of the Year and Chris Pollard of Pfeiffer was named CVAC Coach of the Year.

The awards were selected by the CVAC-member head baseball coaches.
