Golf -- Ayden-Grifton crowned Carolina 1-A champions

Ayden-Grifton easily captured the Carolina 1-A Conference championship contested Thursday afternoon at the par 72, 6,036-yard Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course.

Cameron Taylor led the Chargers with a medal-winning round of 3-under par 69. Adam Andrews added a 73, Blake Harrington had 78, and David Robinson shot 81 completed the Charger scoring.

Ayden-Grifton finished the day with a 301 total. Spring Creek and Rosewood tied for second place with a 324 total. North Johnston finished fourth with a 339, followed by Princeton at 346, Farmville Central at 352 and North Dupliln at 378.

Shane Ogburn led Rosewood with a 78. Joey Wagner carded an 80, followed by Blake Blanton (83) and Matt Hill (86).

Billy Hamm and Stephen Warren emerged the Gators' leaders with rounds of 80. Brandon Payson provided an 82, while Ryan Fields chipped in an 84.

Scott Woodard paced Princeton with an 80. Addison Gainey contributed an 83, while Tyler Worley provided an 89. Riley Boyette added an 89.

Dex Jackson led North Duplin with an 88.

North Johnston's top scorer was Dustin Philyaw with a 78.

The Chargers won the overall standings for the year while Spring Creek was second. Rosewood was third, followed in order by North Johnston, Princeton, Farmville Central and North Duplin.

Andrews, Taylor and Robinson earned all-Carolina Conference honors for the Chargers. Also named to the team were Woodard (Princeton), Philyaw (North Johnston), Ogburn (Rosewood) and Warren (Spring Creek).

Ayden-Grifton, Spring Creek and Rosewood each qualified as teams for N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A eastern regionals on May 3 at Paradise Point at Camp Lejeune.

Princeton's Woodard and Addison Gainey, and North Johnston's Philyaw qualified as individuals for the regionals.
