PINEHURST -- Eastern Wayne High School graduate Lindsey Snyder is tied for eighth place out of 26 golfers as Mount Olive College completed first-round play Sunday in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women's Golf Championship at Foxfire Golf and Country Club in Pinehurst. Snyder shot a 44 on the front nine and a 45 on the back nine for a first-round total of 89. Kate Somek is tied for 17th with a first-round 49-49--98, while Ashley Schatzman, also an Eastern Wayne grad, is 20th with a 53-49--102.

Kathryn Adkins of Anderson College is the first-round leader with an 81. Anderson also leads the team competition with a 345. Mount Olive is one player shy of being eligible for the team competition.

The second round takes place today with the third and final round slated for Tuesday.

Men's golf

Trojans 10th

after weekend

PINEHURST -- Mount Olive is in 10th place out of 10 teams after first-round play Sunday in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women's Golf Championship at Foxfire Golf and Country Club in Pinehurst. The Trojans posted a 323 to finish five strokes behind ninth-place Lees-McRae and 18 strokes behind eighth-place Barton.

Michael Bradshaw and Eric Royster are tied for 36th out of 50 golfers with a first-round 80. Bradshaw carded a 41 on the front nine and a 39 on the back nine, while Royster shot a 40 on both ends. Jason Lodge tied for 41st with a 41-40--81, Chris Bitzenhofer tied for 42nd with a 37-45--82 and Greg McDermott tied for 47th with a 43-40--83.

Belmont Abbey is the first-round leader with a 294, two strokes ahead of Anderson and Limestone. There's a three-way tie for first in the individual competition as Kristian Day (Pfeiffer), Chase Roberts (Queens) and Johary Raveloarison (Coker) all shot a first-round 71.

The second round takes place today with the third and final round slated for Tuesday.

Tennis

Schutte named to

all-tourney team

Mount Olive's Juane Schutte was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Men's Tennis Tournament, it was announced Sunday.

Schutte, a senior from Knysna, South Africa, posted a straight-set victory at No. 3 singles and combined with Rafael Bustos for a win at No. 2 doubles to lead Mount Olive to a 6-2 win over Barton and a third-place finish at the CVAC Tournament.

The top seeds took home championships in the CVAC Men's and Women's Tennis Tournaments at Sumter, S.C. No. 1 seed Anderson defeated No. 2 Lees-McRae 5-3 in the men's championship, while No. 1 Barton defeated No. 2 Lees-McRae 5-2 in the women's championship.

Belmot Abbey

wins CVAC tourney

No. 2 seed Belmont Abbey upset top-seeded Coker 3-2 in the championship game to win the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Softball Championship Sunday at Florence, S.C. The win gives Belmont Abbey its first-ever CVAC softball championship and its first-ever trip to the NCAA II Softball Championship.
