MOUNT OLIVE -- Erin Wilson had three hits and Erin Case tossed a six-hitter as host Mount Olive defeated Pfeiffer 5-1 in game two of an NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
In the first game, Erin Furness's RBI double sparked a two-run eighth inning as Pfeiffer defeated Mount Olive 3-2.
In the first game, Mount Olive (12-18, 5-5 CVAC) threatened in the first inning when Kristie Smith's two-out double put runners on second and third, but a fly out to left field in foul territory ended the inning.
Pfeiffer (4-23, 3-7) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth when Etta Tate hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to drive in a run.
Mount Olive tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Wilson led off with a triple and eventually scored on Liz Recny's sacrifice bunt. But Pfeiffer went ahead to stay in the top of the eighth when Furness doubled to right center to score Jody McCurdy and Tate singled home what proved to be the winning run.
Niki Price scored a run for the Trojans in the bottom of the eighth on a wild pitch and a fielder's choice.
In the second game, Mount Olive took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Wilson hit a one-out triple and scored on a double by Smith, who had two doubles in game one. After Pfeiffer tied the game in the top of the fifth, the Trojans answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning as Kim Goens singled home a run.
Mount Olive added two more runs in the sixth as Recny singled home a run for her second hit of the game. Wilson scored two runs for the Trojans, while Smith went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.
Case struck out three, walked none and made two key defensive plays, catching a line drive in the third inning and knocking down a hard grounder to prevent a base hit in the seventh.
Mount Olive returns to action today as the Trojans play host to St. Andrews in a CVAC doubleheader. Game time is 2 p.m. at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
