PIKEVILLE -- Visiting Washington captured two of three doubles matches and doubled up Charles B. Aycock 6-3 in a four-hour Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match Thursday afternoon.
Third-set tiebreakers factored into two outcomes, while a second-set tiebreaker helped determine the result at No. 5 singles.
Aycock's Danny Fairchild, seeded No. 1, stopped Bryan Nichols 6-3, 3-6, 7-2. The Pam Pack collected the equalizer at No. 3 when Kevin Stancil rallied past Sean Kelly 3-6, 6-2, 7-4.
Washington's Will Whitley outdueled Aycock's David Williams 6-3, 7-6 (2) at No. 5.
The Golden Falcons' David Williams-John Ball recorded an 8-0 shutout at the No. 3 doubles slot.
"Our players put forth an outstanding effort," C.B. Aycock coach Luke Vail said. "The missed volleys and return-of-serve errors were costly in doubles. Danny Fairchild and Rich Holder had quality wins in singles."
The sixth-seeded Holder cruised past Nathan Worsley 6-4, 6-2.
C.B. Aycock (4-3, 3-1 ECC) travels to unbeaten West Carteret next Monday afternoon. The match begins at 4 p.m. at the Atlantic Beach Racquet Club.
Washington exited 4-1 overall.
