Pirate baseball team shut out

GREENVILLE -- Tulane senior right-hander Cory Hahn tossed a complete-game nine-inning shutout as No. 14 Tulane took the series from No. 18 East Carolina, 9-0, on Sunday afternoon at Harrington Field.

It was ECU's first series loss at home since the 2002 season when Louisville shut out the Pirates in the rubber game of a three-game series, which was also the last time the Pirates were shut out at home.

Hahn allowed only six hits through the nine innings while recording seven strikeouts. He allowed only one baserunner past second base. ECU (18-5, 1-2 C-USA) struggled at the plate with six hits, but the Pirates committed four errors in the game.

Nathan Southard finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI for the Green Wave (15-7, 2-1 C-USA). Joe Holland and Brian Bogusevic each added two hits.

Ricky Brooks (1-2) suffered the loss for the Pirates allowing four earned runs on five hits before giving way to Shane Mathews. Mathews struck out five in three innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits. Scott Andrews tossed the final two innings of the game and didn't allow one run.

Tulane loaded the bases on an error and two infield singles in the bottom of the first. Matt Barket then drew a walk for the game's first run with no outs. Brian Bogusevic's RBI single put the Green Wave ahead, 2-0. Greg Dini grounded into a double play to bring home the final run of the inning as Tulane led, 3-0.

The Green Wave extended its lead to, 6-0, in the top of the fifth. Holland singled and Brian Bormaster was hit by a pitch. Matt Barket's infield single loaded the bases. Brooks was called for a balk to score Holland as Tulane went ahead, 4-0. Bogusevic singled to left center to bring in two more runs.

Southard hit a two-out solo home run in the top of the sixth pushing the Green Wave ahead 7-0.

ECU tried to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth.

The Pirates had outscored opponents, 32-10, in the sixth. Trevor Lawhorn doubled with one out, but Hahn got Darryl Lawhorn and Ryan Norwood to ground out for the last two outs of the inning.

The Green Wave added its final two runs of the game in the top of the eighth on two hits and two Pirate errors. Tulane loaded the bases with no outs. Southard drove in Wes Swackhamer for an 8-0 lead, but ECU's Drew Costanzo threw out Tommy Manzella at home to preserve one run.

Holland doubled in another run, before Jamie Paige and Trevor Lawhorn combined to throw out Southard at the plate as the Green Wave took a 9-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

Hahn retired three of the final five batters he faced to preserve the shutout in the ninth.

Jamie Paige, Trevor Lawhorn, Ryan Jones, Mark Minicozzi, Costanzo and John Poppert each had one hit for the Pirates.

East Carolina begins a nine-game road swing Wednesday at Campbell University. The Pirates continue CUSA play next weekend at Memphis.
