Baseball -- Gators sharp in win over Princeton

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek turned in a near-perfect performance in its 3-0 victory against Class 1-A Carolina Conference foe Princeton on Friday afternoon.

Gators coach Roger May was glad to see it.

"The light switch went on," May said. "They did everything right. When we play like this, we can beat anyone. I can't ask for anything more than we got tonight."

Spring Creek climbed above the .500 mark (5-4) heading into next Monday's non-conference home game against Hobbton.

"I hate to lose, but give Spring Creek all the credit," Princeton coach Bruce Proctor said. "They made the plays."

It was a team win for the Gators.

Pitcher Randy Amos picked up his first win of the season. The senior yielded a double to Brandon Pate, a single to Robert Gurley and walked Bren Hall. He struck out five and threw just 87 pitches in a complete-game effort.

Amos was backed up by superlative defensive play.

"You saw some big-league plays in their infield," said Proctor.

Spring Creek shortstop Jes Snyder, third baseman Michael Sigmon and first baseman Blake Thompson combined for 10 putouts. Thompson picked up two key assists, tossing to Amos to nail Colin Porter on a bunt attempt. His throw to Sigmon caught Gurley trying to steal third.

Catcher Jed Potter gunned down Dustin Myers trying to steal. Outfielders Norman Siles and Derek Kirby both had two catches. Only right fielder Josh Lewis was without a defensive chance.

Spring Creek wasted no time scoring.

Snyder, who was perfect in the field, was equally good with the bat. With two outs in the first, he launched a Myers' offering over the center field fence. After a sacrifice fly in the third, Snyder doubled to left center in the fifth and scored the third run of the game on a Sigmon single.

Sigmon was also perfect on the night. He had two singles and reached first the third time on a catcher interference call. Lewis scored the second run. He doubled and came in off a Daniel Thompson single in the bottom of the second.

"We had been doing it with smoke and mirrors," said Proctor. "You don't beat many people on two hits."
