MOC tennis flourishes over weekend

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive's nationally 40th-ranked men's tennis team defeated Coker 9-0 and the Trojans' women's tennis team recorded a 9-0 victory over Coker in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference tennis Sunday at Mount Olive.

In the men's match, Mount Olive (6-4 overall, 3-3 CVAC) won all six singles matches in straight sets and lost only a combined three games in three doubles matches. In the women's match, Mount Olive (3-6 overall, 3-3 CVAC) won five of the six singles matches in straight sets and lost only three games in the three doubles matches.

This weekend's matches were the first home contests of the season for the women's team and first since February 7 for the men's team after the weather had forced the postponement of several home matches. Mount Olive head men's and women's tennis coach Burt Lewis was pleased with the efforts of both teams.

"The men's team showed an excellent effort this weekend," said Lewis.

"We still have work to do, but we're getting better each and every day." Lewis continued, "This was a great confidence-building performance for the women's team this weekend and I'm very pleased with all the ladies.

This weekend gets us back to .500 in the conference."

On Saturday, Mount Olive's men's tennis team defeated Limestone 9-0 and the Trojans' women's tennis team recorded an 8-0 victory over Limestone in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference tennis Saturday at Mount Olive.

In the men's match, Mount Olive won five of six singles matches in straight sets and posted shutouts in two of the three doubles matches. In the women's match, Mount Olive won all five singles matches in straight sets.

Mount Olive's match at Pfeiffer scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed due to weather forcasts and rescheduled for April 2. The Trojans host Queens University at home on Friday in CVAC men's and women's tennis.
