Tennis -- Aycock upends ECC champion

KINSTON -- Charles B. Aycock captured two of the three doubles matches and knocked off two-time defending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference champion Kinston 5-4 on Thursday afternoon.

The teams were tied 3-3 after singles play.

Aycock's No. 2 doubles of Sean Kelly-David Dodson blizted Jonathan Bowen-Josh Anderson 8-1. Kelly had lost to Bowen at No. 3 singles, while Dodson had suffered a straight-set defeat against Anderson at No. 4.

David Williams-John Ball, the Golden Falcons' No. 3 tandem, shut out Chris Mills-Tyler Rose 8-0.

Williams, Brandon Howard and Rich Holder each won a singles match.

"Brandon, David and Rich played well in singles," Aycock coach Luke Vail said. "Our No. 2 and 3 doubles teams played outstanding. This match was a great confidence builder.

"It was C.B. Aycock's first win over Kinston in men's tennis."

The Golden Falcons (3-1, 2-0) entertains West Craven at 4 p.m. next Monday.
