BUNN -- Candace Evans fired a one-hit shutout as North Johnston dumped Bunn 9-0 in a non-conference contest Tuesday.

Evans notched 10 strikeouts and walked one batter in the complete-game win. The Panthers improved to 3-1 overall.

North Johnston broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning.

Candice Renfrow and Janna Rogerson each executed a bunt. Amanda Pope walked, setting the table for Brandy Edwards' two-RBI single. Hannah Ellis followed with an RBI single.

Evans finished off the rally with a two-RBI single.

Ellis emerged the Panthers' offensive leader with five hits and three RBI. Edwards provided three hits and two RBI. Robyn Creech tripled in a 2-for-3 performance.

The teams meet again Friday in Kenly.

Worthington shuts

down Richlands

RICHLANDS -- Morgan Worthington yielded two hits and recorded nine strikeouts as North Lenior hammered Richlands 13-0 in a non-conference contest.

The Hawks remained unbeaten in four outings.

Worthington doubled in a 3-for-5 effort, while Rachel Cromer batted 3-for-5 with a double.

Randi Moulton tripled and drove in four runs. Mary Catherine Mills and Brittany Sanders combined for four hits and a double.

North Lenoir entertains Havelock this afternoon.

Warriors fall

in ECC 3-A battle

WINTERVILLE -- South Central won its first-ever varsity softball game Tuesday, downing Eastern Wayne 5-1 in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match-up.

The Falcons (1-0, 1-0 ECC) got all they would need in the first inning, scoring twice. Katie Holloman opened with a double and Jessie Odom reached on an error.

Nicole Nunamaker followed with another double, driving in both runners.

Emily Sasser, Kristen Elliott and Ashley Mewborn each had a hit for the Warriors.

Odom led the Falcons with two hits.

South Central returns to action on Friday at Southern Wayne, while Eastern Wayne (1-2, 0-1 ECC) plays host to Washington.

Rams roll past

Gators at home

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central pushed over seven runs in the first inning and rolled to a 19-2, non-conference decision against Spring Creek on Tuesday.

The Rams presented head coach Kim Nesbitt with her first career win.

Greene Central (1-1) banged out six hits in the first inning and benefited from two Gator miscues -- a hit batter and an error. Brittany Leggett delivered a two-run double.

Cassie Webb earned the mound victory, striking out three in a three-inning stint. Leggett provided two innings of one-hit relief. The duo combined for a no-hitter.

Amber Oakes emerged the offensive leader with four hits in four at-bats. Elizabeth Cooper tripled in a 3-for-3 effort, while Leggett batted 3-for-3.

Officials halted the game after 4 1/2 innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Greene Central travels to Charles B. Aycock on Friday.

Saints drop

league contest

KINSTON -- Southern Wayne opened its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference schedule with an 8-2 loss at Kinston on Tuesday afternoon.

Danielle Wilkins led the Saints with three hits. Dominique Williams batted 2-for-4 with a triple.

Scarlett Joyner drove in a run, and Leslie Darden went 1-for-3.

Darden took the pitching loss, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on seven hits while striking out two in 2 2/3 innings. Karen Thornton provided 3 1/3 innings of one-hit, two-strikeout relief.

Carla Davis earned the complete-game win for the Vikings. The right-hander got hurt on a line-drive shot in the second inning and sustained numerous bruises on her pitching hand. However, she limited the Saints to seven hits and struck out four.

"She showed a lot of guts ... heart," Southern Wayne coach Brad Matthews said. "We made a lot of mental errors, but we can work on those."

The Saints (2-1, 0-1 ECC) entertain South Central at 7 p.m. Friday.

HARRELLS -- Bethany Malcolm drove in two runs as North Duplin dropped a 12-2, non-conference contest against independent schools member Harrells Christian on Tuesday.

Julie Ivey and Staci Faulk each added one hit for the Rebels, who have eight freshmen on the varsity squad.

Casey Pate suffered the pitching loss in a complete-game effort.

North Duplin (0-3) travels to Hobbton this afternoon.
