SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek's Randy Amos turned in five strong innings on the mound, yielding just two hits and one run in the Gators' season-opening, 7-4 win over North Lenoir on Monday.

The Gators' were paced at the plate by Michael Sigmon, who smacked two doubles and drove in two runs. Spring Creek's Jes Snyder added two hits and an RBI.

North Lenoir took a 4-3 lead with a three-run outburst in sixth, but the Gators' Josh Lewis (1-0) came on to get Spring Creek out of the inning to pick up the win. Sigmon got the save, tossing a scoreless seventh inning.

The Hawks' were paced offensively by Josh Baird, who delivered two RBI on two hits. Jacob Alphin added two hits and one RBI.

Spring Creek will travel to Midway on Wednesday, while North Lenoir takes on Wilson Beddingfield at the Bruins' field on Wednesday.

Warriors drop opener

at New Hanover

WILMINGTON -- Eastern Wayne's Trey Johnson had three hits, including an RBI as the Warriors opened the season with a 9-2 loss at New Hanover High School in downtown Wilmington on Monday.

Eastern Wayne (0-1) trailed just 3-1 in fifth, when the Wildcats scored on a double-play to take a 4-1 lead. New Hanover eventually pulled away with a five-run sixth.

Airlon Vinson picked up the loss for the Warriors, yielding three hits and three-earned runs in four innings of work.

The Warriors staff surrendered 10 walks on the game and walked home three runs.

"We just couldn't pitch well after Vinson. It's early, and we've got some boys who can pitch," Eastern Wayne coach Jabo Fulghum said. "But when you walk 10, you are going to lose. It's the first day and we are going to bounce back."

New Hanover's Chandler Chambers picked up the win, while Daniel Barker paced the Wildcats (1-0) at the plate with two hits, including a double and an RBI.

Jesse Lancaster added an RBI for the Warriors, who entertain the defending Class 4-A N.C. High School Athletic Association champion Greenville Rose on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Brogden 12, Spring Creek 6 -- Brogden's Scott Holloman had two hits, while Jeremy Pate added three RBI for the Rams in the win. Arnell Raynor picked up the win for Brogden (1-0) in its season opener. Timothy Rodgers and Jeffrey Crumpler had two hits each for Spring Creek (0-1), who host Norwayne on Thursday. The Rams host Dillard on Thursday.
