Surprising snow postpones playoffs

Thursday morning's surprising snowstorm threw area teams a curveball and left athletics directors scrambling to reschedule boys' contests in the N.C. High School Athletic Association basketball playoffs.

Wayne, Johnston and Wilson County school systems remained closed today, which has prompted at least seven games to be moved to Saturday or possibly Monday evening.

Spring Creek's boys will entertain Union at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Class 1-A sectional No. 4 semifinals. Union (16-10) defeated Heide Trask on Tuesday, while Spring Creek received a bye.

The Gators, a third-year program, are 0-2 in the playoffs.

Goldsboro athletics director Randy Jordan said this morning that the Cougar girls could play at either 3 or 7 p.m. Saturday. West Brunswick athletics director Marcia Heady was waiting for a confirmation call from the referees.

The Cougars carry an 18-game win streak into the contest, while the Trojans are 8-14.

North Johnston's sectional championship game at Midway is slated for 7 p.m. Saturday.

As of press time, game changes had not been finalized involving boys' teams from Eastern Wayne, Southern Wayne or Rosewood.

The Warrior boys are scheduled to play at Wilson Hunt, while the Saints are the guests of perennial Class 3-A power Jacksonville White Oak.

Rosewood's boys visit Coastal Plains champion Lejeune, which has lost just one game this season.

No information was available on North Lenoir's boys game at Southeast Halifax. The Hawks are attempting to make their second straight trip to the regionals with head coach Charlie Stevens.

All sectional winners advance to the eastern regionals, which are scheduled to begin next Tuesday in Greenville. The girls will play at J.H. Rose High School, while the boys will play at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on the East Carolina University campus.

The Mid-Atlantic Christian Athletic Association 2-A tournament has been rescheduled for next Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Faith Christian Academy.
