MOUNT OLIVE -- Zach Nichols' three-run homer capped an eight-run first inning as host Mount Olive defeated Shaw 11-1 Tuesday in an NCAA Division II non-conference baseball game at Scarborough Field.

Mount Olive scored all of its first-inning runs with two outs.

The Trojans (10-4) trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the first as Shaw used two walks, a single and a sacrifice fly to score the game's first run.

After Mount Olive's first two batters were retired in the bottom of the inning, Craig Hurba reached on an error and the floodgates opened as Shaw committed five errors and two passed balls in the inning. With Sam Martin on first and Matt Johnson on second, Nichols homered over the fence in right center field for his second home run of the year.

The Trojans led 7-0.

Lead-off hitter Alan Thomas followed with a double in his second at-bat of the inning and scored on Stephen Nordan's single.

Mount Olive starter Ryan Barham allowed only two more hits and one more walk over the next four innings as the freshman picked up a win in his first collegiate appearance.

Blake Montgomery and Jason Sharp combined to pitch four shutout innings, allowing only one hit. Montgomery struck out the last four batters he faced, all looking. Sharp struck out the side in his first inning on the mound.

Mount Olive struck for two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on Shawn Warner's two-run double and added its final run in the eighth on a wild pitch.

Shaw starter LeTrinca Radcliffe allowed three more hits over the next six innings. All of the runs were unearned. Jermaine Rogers hit the sacrifice fly in the first inning to plate Brandon Smith for Shaw's run.

The Trojans return to action Thursday at Elizabeth City State University. Game time is 2 p.m.
