With their Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference semifinal clash at New Hope tied at 35-35 heading into the fourth period, West Carteret exploded for 27 fourth period points to claim a 65-48 win over the second-seeded Warriors.

The Patriots win over Eastern Wayne sets up a conference championship showdown in Morehead City on Saturday against fourth-seeded Southern Wayne. Saturday's tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m."Our told our guys it was a missed opportunity to win the conference championship, but we will regroup to start the state playoffs next week," Eastern Wayne coach Marvin Bowman said.

The loss drops the Warriors into the third seed heading into the state playoffs. The number two seed will now go to the winner of the conference championship.

Eastern Wayne will now travel to take on the Northeastern Coastal number two seed in the first round on Tuesday.

Justin Richardson proved to be the only Warrior in double figures with 15 points. Adrian Kendrick added nine, while Nate Walker added eight.

"We had the shots, we just didn't make them," Bowman said.

Johnny Thomas paced four Patriots in double figures with 21 points as Brandon Bryant dropped in 16 and Casey Washington added 14. Drew Poulk provided 10 points in the win.

KINSTON -- Kinston's girls know a little about getting to the free throw line in a basketball game. Against Charles B. Aycock in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament, the Lady Vikings delivered a grad school lesson to the Lady Falcons in charity stripe work.

ShoShonna Moore had 20 points -- 12 from the free-throw line in 16 attempts -- as Kinston beat Aycock 49-46. The victory moves Kinston into tonight's tournament championship against Goldsboro. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Cougar Den.

Aycock jumped out to a 14-5 lead after one period, but the Lady Vikings reeled in their visitors over the course of the game. But the trouble for the Lady Falcons was from referees' whistles -- Aycock was called for 28 fouls to Kinston's eight.

"This was all about free throws," said Aycock coach Gary Hales. "We're moving our feet, they are charging in on us, and they weren't giving us our position."

Quaneisha Milner had 16 points and Lela Reid had 10 to pace Aycock (16-7) who goes to Manteo for a first-round playoff game on Monday. Kelly Bradshaw added 11 points for Kinston.

"I thought we played well," said Hales. "I'm proud of them. We just could not get any momentum because there was always a foul called."
