SW boys, Aycock girls advance

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Artimus Quick scored a team-high 14 points as the Saints kept their poise to claim a 48-42 win over West Craven at home on Wednesday in the first round of the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference tournament.

The win sets up a second-round match-up with rival Goldsboro (13-13), who upset top-seeded Kinston on Wednesday, in Dudley tonight at 8 p.m.

"It's going to take a whole lot more for us to win tonight, and I'm sure they (Goldsboro) are on a tremendous high after beating Kinston," Southern Wayne coach Michael Olliver said. "I'm really looking forward to it, especially for the kids."

The Saints (12-11) had just defeated the Eagles on Thursday night to lock up the conference's fourth seed. Olliver felt like his team was a little out of synch, but was proud of their ability to hang on.

"We had played them on Friday night to get the fourth spot," he said. "We were just a little out of synch, but we played good enough defense and ran our stuff well enough to win the ball game."

West Craven, who concluded the season at 11-12, was led by Tony Jones with 15 points.

Akeem Royal chipped in eight for Southern Wayne.

Reid paces

Aycock in first round

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Lela Reid poured in a season-high 18 points as the Golden Falcons opened up the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference with a 49-44 win over West Carteret.

Aycock (17-6), the conference's third seed, now moves on to face second-seeded Kinston at the Vikings' gymnasium today at 6 p.m. Kinston swept the season series against the Golden Falcons.

"We've got to eliminate their transition game, and key on Shashonna Moore," Aycock coach Gary Hales said. "That's the way to beat them."

The Falcons trailed 38-31 going into the fourth period, but Aycock went on to outscore West Carteret 18-6 in the final period.

"That's the way we play for some reason. We always like to wait until the four period to play and it's going to bite us if we continue to do that," Hales said.

Emily Stewart added nine points for Aycock, while Jennifer Williamson contributed eight and Quaneisha Milner chipped in seven.
