WCDS girls advance in CPIC tournament

Carolyn Ziemer tallied a game-high 10 points, leading Wayne Country Day past Rocky Mount Academy 36-27 in the "play-in" game of the Class 1-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference tournament.

The Chargers (8-12) oppose top-seeded Greenfield School at 3 p.m. Friday on the Kerr-Vance Academy campus in Henderson. The host Spartans face third-seeded Faith Christian of Rocky Mount in the other semifinal game.

Greenfield has secured the league's automatic bid to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association tournament.

Hannah Grantham and Christin Grubb each collected eight points for Wayne Country Day, which beat the Eagles for the third time in less than a week. Louise Northington added six.

Brooke Pearsall led RMA with nine points. The Eagles concluded their season 2-22.

The boys' portion of the tournament also began Tuesday night. Rocky Mount Academy edged rival Faith Christian 62-60 on a buzzer-beating shot in the "play-in" game. The Eagles face regular-season champion Kerr-Vance in one semifinal on Friday.

Wayne Country Day faces Greenfield in the other semifinal.

Both championship games are scheduled for Saturday.
