MOC players

win CVAC awards

MOUNT OLIVE -- Marcus West, whose 75-foot buzzer-beater against Pfeiffer made national news, was named CVAC men's basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday.

West, a three-time Player of the Week winner last year, has now won the award four times in his two years at Mount Olive. A 6-7 senior from Phoenix, Ariz., West launched a 75-foot one-handed line-drive shot at the buzzer in Mount Olive's 108-105 win over then-No. 3 Pfeiffer last Monday, handing Pfeiffer its first loss of the season.

West's shot aired nationally on ESPN, CNN and Fox Sports Net, as well as on local television outlets in Eastern North Carolina and throughout the country, including his hometown of Phoenix. His shot was No. 1 on the February 9 edition of ESPN Sportscenter's "Top 10 Plays of the Day" and was also that day's "Play of the Day" on CNN Headline News.

A preseason All-American, West finished with 22 points and seven rebounds against Pfeiffer and recorded identical totals three nights later at Belmont Abbey. West averaged 19.7 points in three games last week.

Mount Olive (17-5, 11-4 CVAC) is ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division II east region poll.

Corbett honored

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College pitcher Brian Corbett was named CVAC baseball Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday.

Corbett, a junior from Marion, S.C., pitched four shutout innings in relief to pick up a victory over nationally 20th-ranked Shippensburg (Pa.) University. He struck out seven and allowed only one hit.

Mount Olive is 6-2 and has won its last four games. The Trojans return to action today at Wingate University. The doubleheader begins at noon.
