DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's girls got balanced scoring from the entire lineup as the Lady Saints beat Washington 49-44 Friday night in the play-in game of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference Tournament.

The Lady Saints advance to a quarterfinal matchup at top-seeded Goldsboro Monday night at 7 p.m.

Southern Wayne, using several call-up players from their conference champion JV squad, scored 18 points in the third period to build a 40-28 lead. Washington closed the gap to five points but could not draw any closer.

"We played a lot of people and got scoring throughout the team," said Southern Wayne coach Richard Proctor. "We played good defense and rebounded well. They have a couple of good shooters, and we controlled them defensively."

Tiffany Swinson and Jessica Teachey both had 11 points to pace Southern Wayne, which saw 11 players score in the contest. Washington was paced by 17 points form Jeri Bell and 11 from Meredith Knox.

" We finally finished a game," said Proctor. "This was a team victory, and we needed it as we head to Goldsboro."
