Area swimmers compete today

HILLSBOROUGH -- More than 20 swimmers from three Wayne County schools begin competition today in the 2004 N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A eastern regional individual championships at the Triangle SportsPlex.

Southern Wayne qualified three individual and two boys' relay teams.

Sean Hirsch is scheduled to swim the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, while Jeff Wice will compete in the 50 and 100 freestyles.

Jaimie Niemond qualified for the 50 freestyle.

The Saints' 200 and 400 freestyle relays will also see action in the boys' meet.

Eastern Wayne is sending 11 competitors and five relay teams to the day-long event.

Rob Cagle is in the 200 and 100 freestyles, and will swim a leg on the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Michael Hallock is participating in the 200 IM and 500 free, and also swimming for the 200 medley and 400 free relays.

Billy Reed and Garrett Turknett complete the two relay squads. Reed is scheduled to swim the 50 and 100 free. Turknett will swim the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.

Seven Warriors take to the water in the girls' meet.

Carly Boyette, Misty Cook, Denise Moulas and Rachael Stoneburner compose the 200 freestyle relay. Hallock, Moulas, Hina New and Ashley Robinson make up the 200 medley relay. Hallock, New, Robinson and Stoneburner conclude their relay appearances in the 400 free.

Boyette is in the 50 free and 500 free, while Cork is in the 100 backstroke.

Hallock qualified for the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Moulas is in the 500 free and 100 breaststroke. New (200 free, 100 fly), Robinson (200 IM, 500 free) and Stoneburner (200 free, 100 free) will also have a busy afternoon.

Charles B. Aycock is sending three individuals who each qualified in two events.

Kalvin LeRoy will compete in the 200 and 500 free events on the boys' side.

Garrett Forrest and Kathleen Connolly are scheduled to swim the 50 and 100 free.

The Golden Falcons are sending relays in the 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free.

The top eight finishers in each region advance to the state meet scheduled for Feb. 14 at the Willis R. Casey Natatorium on the N.C. State campus in Raleigh.
