PRINCETON -- Karter Yutzy sank two free throws with 11 seconds left as Princeton handed county archrival North Johnston a 59-58 defeat in Class 1-A Carolina Conference action Tuesday evening.

Yutzy finished with 27 points, including an incredible 17-of-18 effort at the free throw line. The junior guard successfully converted his last 15 free throw attempts as the Bulldogs presented first-year coach Jeff Davis his first-ever league victory.

The Panthers, who handed the Bulldogs a 20-point setback on Monday, had one last chance to pull out the win. Antonio Humphrey drove the lane uncontested, missed the shot and Princeton's Daniel Gerrell snared the rebound as time expired.

"It was a great game," Davis said. "We needed a win big time."

Princeton owned a 46-39 lead, but watched North Johnston come back to take a five-point lead of its own. However, the Panthers couldn't maintain the momentum.

Center Willie Smith picked up his fourth foul and then received a technical to end his night.

"That was big for us because we don't have anybody to match up with him," Davis said.

Davis also gave Yutzy the defensive assignment of shutting down sharp-shooting Jake Lomonaco in a diamond-and-one scheme. The ploy took Yutzy out of rebounding position, but Lomonaco didn't touch the ball the final six minutes of the game.

Yutzy emerged the lone Bulldog in double digits. He received a plaque at halftime for reaching the 1,000-point plateau in his career, but he's well beyond the mark with 1,186.

Brad Holloman and Lomonaco tallied 18 and 17 points, respectively, for the Panthers.

Princeton (3-17) travels to Farmville Central next Tuesday.

Gators claim

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek point guard Josh Bishop scored 25 points and dished out eight assists as the Gators picked up a crucial, Class 1-A Carolina Conference win by stopping Farmville Central 70-59 at home on Tuesday.

The win improves the Gators to 15-5 overall and 8-1 in conference play.

Spring Creek made a solid first step in a big week, which features another match-up against the Jaguars (7-2 Carolina) in Farmville on Thursday and a showdown with another conference contender Ayden-Grifton at home on Friday. The Chargers handed the Gators their only Carolina loss earlier in the season.

"I was real nervous last night, because I haven't heard a lot about them (Farmville) and haven't seen them at all," Spring Creek Sonny Kilpatrick said. "I'm looking forward to playing them at their place Thursday, because now we know what they can do and what we can do."

Bishop wasn't alone in the big win as teammates Shane Stevenson added 14 points and Grey Wilson contributed 12.

The Gators, who continue to improve on the boards, got a stout effort from Brian Armstrong with 16 rebounds.

"We are still aren't boxing out as good as we need to, but as long as we rebound we can play with anybody," Spring Creek coach Sonny Kilpatrick said. "Our rebounding has stepped up."

Javius Dixon led the Jaguars with 18 points, while Justin Foskey scored 10.

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Akeem Royal tallied a season high 24 points, including six three-pointers, as the Saints rushed out to an early lead and held on 56-54 over Washington on Tuesday.

The Saints (9-10 overall) improved to 6-7 against Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play heading into Friday's rivalry clash at Eastern Wayne.

Artimus Quick added 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Saints.

"It was an excellent game with the pressure on the kids to win out," Southern Wayne coach Michael Olliver said.

Calvin Daniels (9-11, 5-8 ECC 3-A) led Washington with 23 points.

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock turned in one of its better defensive performances of the year and shot well at the free throw line in a 68-61 win against West Carteret on Tuesday.

The Golden Falcons drained 11 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter as they earned their fourth victory in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action. Aycock improved to 4-15 overall heading into Friday's game at South Central.

"We started defensively great, but we missed so many easy shots early," Aycock coach David West said. "We started slipping behind their defense in the second quarter out of their 1-3-1 trap at half-court. We were very consistent.

"All 13 players did a great job tonight. They all played a tremendous defensive game. It was probably the best team-oriented game all year."

Rob Phillips paced the Golden Falcon offense with 11 points, including 6-of-6 effort at the free throw line in the final period. Jamorris Dickerson controlled the boards with 10 rebounds.

Cody Washington led four Patriots in double figures with 16 points. Shawn Stanley added 14. Johnny Thomas and Brandon Bryant chipped in 12 and 10, respectively.

LITTLEFIELD -- North Duplin's Montrell Garner scored 12 points, but it was not enough as Ayden-Grifton continued its solid play in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference with a 66-40 win over North Duplin on Wednesday at home.

Jamal Rouse paced the Chargers (11-6, 7-1 Carolina) with 16 points.

The Rebels (6-9, 4-6 Carolina) also got 10 points each from Saladeem Dewberry and Matt Braswell. North Duplin travels to Farmville on Friday.

Goldsboro came from 17 points down to beat Eastern Wayne 76-72 Tuesday night.

Tim Kornegay led the Cougars with 22 points while Otavius McKinnon had 21 and Brandon Herring had 12. Landon Downes led Eastern Wayne with 15 points, with 12 from D'Ardian Waters, 11 from Neil Robinson and 10 from monty Best.

Chargers pick

up CPIC victory

Chad Roberson accounted for nearly half of Wayne Country Day's offense in a 42-39 victory against Greenfield in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A action Tuesday.

Roberson tallied 19 points for the Chargers, who remained unbeaten in five CPIC outings. Teammate Travis Davis contributed 11 points.

Wayne Country Day (10-4) travels to Rocky Mount Academy on Friday.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Dalress Bell led three players in double figures with 22 points as Spring Creek clipped Farmville Central 74-71 in Carolina 1-A Conference play.

Josh Wright added 17 and Cliff Wilson chipped in 16 for the Gators.

Lee Lanier led the visiting Jaguars with 22.

Spring Creek (14-4) climbed to 8-1 in the Carolina Conference and entertains Ayden-Grifton on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock inched above the .500 mark in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action with a 43-40 decision against West Carteret on Tuesday.

Lamada Williams led the Golden Falcons' offense with 17 points, while Chris Foreman pumped in 10.

Aycock (10-9, 7-6 ECC) travels to South Central on Friday.

Conquerors balanced

Nine different Faith Christian players scored as the Conquerors claimed a 44-24 win at home over Trinity Christian of Greenville.

Faith is now 11-5 overall and 3-4 in Mid-Atlantic Christian 2-A Conference play heading into Friday's tilt at home against Bethel Christian of Kinston.
