Rosewood wins wrestling tourney

Senior Aaron Lynch seized most outstanding wrestler accolades and helped Rosewood dominate the season-ending Class 1-A Carolina/Tar-Roanoke Conference wrestling tournament Saturday at Rosewood.

Lynch prevailed as the 152-pound champion for the Eagles, who amassed 230 points in the four-team tournament. Durham School of the Arts finished second with 80, followed by Spring Creek (70) and North Edgecombe (46.5).

Rosewood, led by C/T-RC coach of the year Bill Edmundson, picked up 11 individual championships.

Freshman Jim Bish won the 103-pound title. Ramsey Brown, once-beaten in 38 outings, was crowned the 112-pound champion. Teammate Tyler Daniels competed unopposed in the 119-pound class, while an injured Matt Davis emerged the top grappler at 125.

Senior Bryce Havenook (130), sophomore Shane Ogburn (135), senior Alan Corbett (145), junior Kyle Scott (171), freshman Antar Shafer (189) and heavyweight Clayton Taylor each seized a gold medal.

Rosewood's Abel Enriquez (103), Brandon Enriquez (140), Joseph Edwards (160), Hampton Carswell (189) and Troy Smith (215) each finished second at their respective weight classes.

Spring Creek's Wes Denham grabbed the 215-pound title.

North Edgecombe's Timmy Downing won the 140-pound class, while DSA's Luke Stevens nabbed the top spot at 160.

Rosewood and DSA return to action Tuesday in the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs. The Eagles (20-6) oppose defending champion South Davidson, while DSA tangles with West Davidson in the opening round.

Ram duo shines

at EPCtourney

TARBORO -- Jimmy Edmonds and heavyweight Justin St. John each prevailed in their respective weight classes during the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference wrestling tournament contested Saturday afternoon at Tarboro High School.

Edmonds, a junior, picked up the 189-pound title and ran his record to 14-3. St. John, a senior, climbed to 13-5 after taking the gold.

Greene Central took nine grapplers to the four-team meet and every one returned home with a medal.

Kyle Judd (119 pounds) and Cameron Taylor (130) each finished second in their respective weight classes. Teammates Jason Hill (103), Michael Wheeler (125), Dale Hines (140), Talmage Patrick (171) and Adam Ransome (215) each ended up third.

SouthWest Edgecombe repeated as tournament champion, while North Pitt was second. North Pitt's Raymond Pearson earned EPC wrestler of the year accolades.

Once the tournament ended, Greene Central and Tarboro staged a make-up dual meet. The Rams rallied from an 11-point deficit to claim a 36-35 victory against the Vikings.

Tarboro scored 23 of 29 points during the middle matches for a 29-24 lead after Peter Heffley's technical fall against Patrick at 171. Kirk Heffley earned a forfeit at 189, which boosted the Vikings' advantage to 35-24.

Edmonds and St. John each earned six points in their respective matches. Edmonds pinned Eric Sutton, while St. John collected a forfeit to help the Rams pull out the one-point win.
