Mount Olive Baseball picked second In CVAC

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College is picked second in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference preseason baseball poll, as selected by the CVAC head baseball coaches.

The Trojans earned four of the nine first-place votes and finished with 58 points, two points behind preseason No. 1 Pfeiffer, which also received four first-place votes. Anderson, which received the remaining first-place vote, is tied with Barton for third in the poll.

Mount Olive also placed three players on the Preseason All-CVAC Team pitcher Brian Corbett, catcher Craig Hurba and designated hitter Steve Parrish. Corbett, a junior left-hander from Marion, S.C., earned All-CVAC and All-South Atlantic Region honors last season. Hurba, a senior from Maryland, N.Y., was also an All-CVAC and All-Region selection, hitting .346 with nine home runs and 43 runs batted in.

Parrish, a senior from Fremont, was an All-American selection last year to go with All-Region and All-CVAC honors. Parrish hit .359 last season with seven homers and 52 RBI.

Mount Olive finished 31-21 last year and won the CVAC regular season title. The Trojans were ranked as high as No. 2 in the South Atlantic Region.

The Trojans open play this weekend with a three-game series at Newberry.

Mount Olive plays its first home contests next weekend with a pair of doubleheaders as the Trojans play host to Catawba Saturday and follow with a twinbill against Lenoir-Rhyne Sunday.
