Mount Olive Picked fourth in men's tennis

Mount Olive College has been picked fourth in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's tennis preseason poll, as selected by the CVAC men's tennis head coaches.

Mount Olive earned one first-place vote and received 72 points in the poll.

Mount Olive is led by junior Fernando Crisosto, who is ranked No. 10 in the Southeast Region and No. 41 in the nation. Seniors Ibrahim Bouaabdalli and Juane Schutte, and junior Christof Franzsen are also expected to help lead the Trojans in 2004.

Last year's regular season champion Anderson is the top vote-getter with seven first-place votes and 97 points. Last year's CVAC Tournament champion Lees-McRae picked up two first-place votes and 87 points to edge out Barton, which received one first-place vote and 86 points.

Mount Olive opens its season February 7 as the Trojans play host to Johnson C. Smith.

MOC women's tennis predicted sixth

Mount Olive has been picked sixth in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women's Tennis Preseason Poll, as selected by the CVAC head women's tennis coaches.

Mount Olive received 58 points in the poll, 12 points behind fifth-place Erskine and 17 points ahead of seventh-place Pfeiffer.

The Trojans are led by sophomores Lucia Henkle and Mariana Shimoda, who are expected to play the Nos. 1 and 2 singles positions. Senior Amanda Aycock is also expected to help lead the Trojans.

Barton is the top vote-getter with six first-place votes and 96 points.

Defending conference champion Pfeiffer is picked second with three first-place votes and 91 points. Third-place Lees-McRae and fourth-place Queens each received one first-place vote.

Mount Olive opens its season February 14 as the Trojans play host to Francis Marion.

Trojan softball

picked 10th in CVAC

Mount Olive College was picked 10th in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference softball preseason poll, as selected by the CVAC head softball coaches.

Mount Olive finished with 28 points in the poll, 14 points ahead of 11th-place Lees-McRae and 11 points behind ninth-place Barton.

Thirteen of the Trojans' 17 players are newcomers, including 11 freshmen. Outfielder Liz Recny is the lone senior on the squad, while freshman infielder Colleen Thomas and freshman outfielder Erin Wilson are also expected to make a significant contribution. The Trojans will also look to a pair of junior college transfers to make an impact this season -- infielder Samantha Beavers, a transfer from Louisburg College, and pitcher Erin Case, a transfer from Shasta College (Calif.).

Coker is picked first, garnering eight first-place votes and 97 points, followed by Anderson and Queens, which each received one first-place vote. Seventh-place Erskine received the remaining first-place vote.
