MOC men win 10th straight, Lady Trojans fall

MOUNT OLIVE -- Brad McDougald led six players in double figures with 13 points as host Mount Olive picked up its school-record 10th consecutive win with an 89-67 victory against St. Andrews in NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's basketball action Tuesday.

The Trojans scored the opening basket of the game and led from start to finish.

Mount Olive (13-2, 7-1 CVAC) jumped out to an 18-6 lead after back-to-back three-pointers by McDougald.

St. Andrews cut the deficit to six, but the Trojans built the lead to as many as 13 points before going into halftime with a 39-29 lead. The Knights (4-11, 2-7) pulled within nine early in the second half, but Sharome Holloway's putback with 19:08 remaining gave Mount Olive a 43-32 lead and the Trojans led in double figures the rest of the way.

McDougald's alley-oop dunk from Janson Greene gave the Trojans a 15-point lead and Johnny Galarza's three-pointer extended the Trojans' lead to 71-50 with 9:25 remaining.

St. Andrews never got closer than 16 points the rest of the way.

Galarza finished with 12 points for the Trojans, while Greene, Holloway, Sean Barnett and Marcus West added 10 points apiece. Hazael Andrew led St. Andrews with a game-high 16 points and 10 rebounds.

McDougald, who ranks third in the CVAC in three-point field goal percentage, went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. McDougald and Greene dished out six assists apiece for the Trojans, while West added four assists and three blocked shots.

The Trojans shot 50.0 percent from the field for the game, including 65.4 percent (17-for-26) in the second half. Mount Olive held St. Andrews to 31.9 percent (23-for-72) from the field.

Mount Olive was among five teams listed among "Others Receiving Consideration" in this week's NABC/Division II Bulletin Top 25, placing the Trojans in the top 30 in the nation. Mount Olive was also ranked No. 2 last week in the season's first NCAA II East Region poll. This week's poll will be announced Wednesday.

The Trojans return to action Friday with a home game against Anderson (S.C.) College. The CVAC matchup is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at College Hall.

St. Andrews women nip Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE -- Quita Currie scored 18 points and hit the game-winning layup with 5.5 seconds left to give St. Andrews a 67-66 win against Mount Olive College in NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's basketball game Tuesday evening.

Currie's basket came eight seconds after Latoria Harvey put the Trojans ahead 66-65.

Mount Olive (6-8, 3-5 CVAC) trailed by as many as five points in the first half before Tanika Hudgins and Melanie Cobb combined for all of the points in a 7-0 run to give the Trojans a 24-22 lead late in the half.

St. Andrews (5-10, 3-6) scored the final five points of the half to go into the locker room with a 27-24 lead.

After a St. Andrews free throw, the Trojans went on a 12-2 run as Brandy Smith's three-pointer gave Mount Olive its biggest lead at 36-30 with 16:34 left in the half.

Currie sparked a St. Andrews run as the Knights took a 45-40 lead with 10:22 remaining. The Trojans rallied to take a three-point lead before a 9-0 run gave St. Andrews a 63-57 lead with 1:48 left in the game.

Smith cut the lead in half with her third three-pointer of the game and Teneal Boone hit a 10-foot baseline jumper to pull the Trojans within 63-62 with 53 seconds left. After Mandy Coltrain hit a basket for St. Andrews, Harvey hit a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left to cut the lead back to one. Hudgins then made a steal near midcourt and Harvey hit a 12-foot jumper from inside the lane to give the Trojans a 66-65 lead with 13 seconds left.

After a timeout, Currie drove the length of the court and drew a foul as she hit the go-ahead layup. She missed the free throw, but Hudgins' 35-footer at the buzzer bounced off the side of the rim.

Harvey finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Trojans, while Smith added a season-high 15 points. Coltrain finished with 14 points for St. Andrews.

Mount Olive entertains Newport News Apprentice today. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
