GAYNELLE PUCKETT SUMMERLIN

Gaynelle Puckett Summerlin, 80, a resident of Marian Manor Assisted Living in Virginia Beach, Va., formerly of Richlands, N.C., was called home to be with the Lord Friday, Oct. 13, 2017.

Gaynelle was born Nov. 3, 1936, to Raymond and Luna Puckett of Mount Olive, N.C.

She graduated from Mount Olive High School in 1955, and attended the Women's College of the University of North Carolina for one year.

She married Billy McCoy Summerlin Sept. 7, 1956, and they began their life as a military family, traveling the globe and making lifelong friends along the way.

Gaynelle is survived by her three children, Billie Summerlin Stokes and her husband, Thomas M. Stokes III, of Frederick, Md., Dr. Raymond McCoy Summerlin and his wife, Wendy Beth, of Pace, Fla., and Tracie Summerlin Holcomb and her husband, Delegate Norman "Rocky" D. Holcomb III of Virginia Beach, Va.

She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Timothy McCoy Summerlin and his wife, April, of Jay, Fla., Mary Elizabeth Lunsford and her husband, Weston, of Milton, Fla., Amanda Gaylin Stokes of Rome, Ga., Andrew McCoy Summerlin of Pace, Fla., Thomas M. Stokes IV of Raleigh, N.C., Summer Lynn Holcomb of Morgantown, W.Va., and Norman D. Holcomb IV of Virginia Beach, Va., and one great-grandchild, Avery Grace Lunsford of Milton, Fla.

She is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, John R. and Marilu Puckett of Dunwoody, Ga.; one sister-in-law, Eva Nan Summerlin of Summerlin's Crossroads, N.C.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years, retired United States Marine Corps Col. Billy M. Summerlin; her parents, Raymond and Luna Puckett; and her siblings, Royal Puckett, Billy Puckett, Hilda Puckett Lambert and Ralph Keith Puckett.

Gaynelle was an active member of First Baptist Church of Richlands, and enjoyed her Sunday school class until her health declined several years ago.

She will always be remembered for her strong and fierce love of her husband, children and grandchildren. Family was the center of her world, and we will be forever grateful for her many sacrifices.

Her physical presence on this earth will be missed, but we take comfort in knowing she is now reunited with her loved ones in heaven.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 19, at noon at Jones Funeral Home, 303 Chaney Ave., Jacksonville, N.C., followed by a service of remembrance at 1. Burial will take place at Coastal Carolina Veterans Cemetery at 2 p.m. Lt. Cmdr. Joe Robbins, CHC, United States Navy, will officiate the services.
