Hazel Naomi Durham, 96, departed this walk of life Monday, Sept. 18, 2017, at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church in Dudley. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow at First Congregational Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Durham was born in Wayne County on Oct. 22, 1920, to the late Granger and Eva Simmons Carter. She was a member of First Congregational Church, where she served in many capacities. She was a lifetime member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and a member of Les Soeurs. Mrs. Durham later retired as a teacher, having taught for 32 years in the Wayne County school system.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter, Eve Barnes of Durham; her son, Lippmon “Sonny” Stanford Durham and wife, Eurica, of Advance, N.C.; four grandchildren, Sean Durham, Tracey Yarborough, Richard Barnes II and Evette Briskey; six great-grandchildren, Jalen, Delaney, Lleyton, Yasmeen, Laila and Mariah; Doris Durham of Windsor Mill, Md., who was like a daughter to Mrs. Durham; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Durham was preceded in death by her husband, Lippmon Durham.
