LOIS SUGG BARROW

Aug. 28, 1921-Aug. 24, 2017

Lois Sugg Barrow, 95, Snow Hill, died peacefully Aug. 24, 2017, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Lois was born Aug. 28, 1921, in Greene County, N.C., to Levy Jacob Sugg and Ludia Sugg.

Family and friends were Lois' passion and delight.

She grew up on a family farm, which shaped her values of hard work, compassion, dedication, loyalty and persistence, as well as her love for her family and friends.

She was one of 12 children raised on the farm by her "Mama" and "Papa," which, in addition to crops, included a grist mill and a cotton gin for grinding grain and ginning cotton for others.

In 1939, Lois married the love of her life, Edward Earl Barrow, and they began their partnership together in farming. She was a full-time homemaker and farm worker for 25 years.

An excellent seamstress, she made many dresses for herself and her daughter, as well as shirts for her sons.

At the age of 42, she went to beauty school, and enjoyed a career as a cosmetologist for 25 years.

Always one with a sense of duty and responsibility, she voted in every presidential election (19) once she was eligible, beginning in 1944 through 2016.

A member of Rainbow United Methodist Church for more than 83 years, she took much pride at recently being recognized as one of the oldest active members in the church.

She enjoyed her church activities and home demonstration meetings, which included learning to can and freeze vegetables for her family.

At the quilting gatherings, she would quilt for a while and then at the group's urging, play the piano while the others finished up.

She would play the piano for her immediately family's enjoyment up into her 80s.

She touched many lives, who quickly fell in love with her as she displayed her love for her Lord and Savior and others.

She always put the Lord first, others second and her own needs and wants last. To know her was to love her.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Maude S. Hill, Bettie S. Hill, Myrtle S. Hill and Lillie S. Heath; brothers, Levy Sugg Jr., Sammie Sugg, infant Sugg, Willie Sugg, Harper Sugg and Jasper "Pete" Sugg; and a great-grandson, Levi Barrow.

Her surviving family includes her daughter, Patricia B. Evans (Maurice) of Youngsville, Edward L. Barrow (Debbie) of Kinston and Larry J. Barrow (Lois) of Farmville; grandchildren, Melissa Culbreth (Jason) of Raleigh, Jake Barrow (Missy) of Farmville, Michael Miller (Heather) of Raleigh, Andy Barrow (Carie) of Greensboro, Randy Barrow (Jenny) of Raleigh and Bryan Barrow (Ashley) of Snow Hill; great-grandchildren, Nathan Barrow, Sam Barrow, Adam Barrow, Jonathan Barrow, Leland Barrow, Sidney Miller, Carson Miller, James Barrow and Jack Barrow; a sister, Louise S. McLawhorn and husband, James Ray, of Snow Hill; sisters-in-law, Eula Grace Sugg and Nannie Mae Barrow; brother-in-law, M. Bailey Barrow; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express its appreciation to caregivers Bonnie Foy, Anitta Lynch and a special nephew, Parrott Heath, as well as the nurses and staff at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, for the love and compassion shown to their mother.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Rainbow United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Patrick Keely officiating. Interment will follow in Rainbow Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gift suggestions include Rainbow United Methodist Church, c/o Ray Pridgen, 704 Greenridge Road, Snow Hill, N.C., 28580; Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534; or a charity of one's choice.
