CHARLES LAWSON SNIPES JR.
Aug. 30, 1935-Oct. 4, 2016
Charles Lawson Snipes Jr. died peacefully at home the night of Oct. 4, 2016.
He was born Aug. 30, 1935, in Durham to the late Ina and Charles Lawson Snipes of Wilmington, who predeceased him.
Charles is survived by his wife, Lu Jones Snipes of the home; son, Chuck and wife, Jana, of Goldsboro; daughter, Donna Snipes Schoettmer of Dallas, Texas; and his three grandsons, Stephen Schoettmer of Birmingham, Ala., and Jeff Schoettmer and Michael Schoettmer of Dallas.
He is also survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Don and Billie Stallings of Rocky Mount, and nephew, Herb Evans and wife, Jessica, and their sons, Connor and Edward.
He graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington in 1953, Wake Forest University in 1957 and Wake Forest School of Law in 1960.
He and his wife bought the Ford dealership in Goldsboro in 1961, which he operated, joined by his son, for 40 years.
Charles served on the boards of the Carolina Ford Dealers Advertising Fund, the North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association, the Wake Forest Deacon Club and Wayne Country Day School and as chairman of the capital campaign there.
He also served as president of the Goldsboro Area Chamber of Commerce, the Goldsboro Industrial Committee of 100 and president of the board of Walnut Creek Country Club.
Charles was a trustee emeritus of Wake Forest University, where he spent many happy weekends both home and away enjoying Wake Forest football with friends, later watching Wake Forest baseball, where his oldest grandson Stephen played.
For the past five years, the University of North Carolina football, however, had had a special place in his heart as he watched his middle grandson, Jeff, play linebacker there.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the home, 214 Ridgewood Drive.
A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Goldsboro at 11 a.m. Friday.
