E. CAREY MEWBORN

Oct. 28, 1942-July 3, 2016

Ervin Carey Mewborn, 73, of LaGrange, peacefully passed away Sunday, July 3, 2016. Carey was born Oct. 28, 1942 in Lenoir County to the late Ervin Chester Mewborn Jr. and Evelyn Mozingo Price. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Chris Mewborn and his stepfather, Newby Price.

Always fascinated by cars, Carey worked as parts manager through the years at Cobb Chevrolet, Dan Wise Chevrolet and Sklyland Chevrolet. He later retired from Goldsboro Milling, where he worked in fleet maintenance.

Carey loved racing and being around the race track. He enjoyed seafood on Friday night and nothing was better than fried chicken for Sunday lunch. He loved Robert Radford’s barbecue and loved to sit around the grill and supervise the cooking. Carey was never one to stir too early and loved to spin a good story down to the smallest detail. He enjoyed riding on his El Camino and loved riding down to the farm to check everything out. Carey enjoyed a good western movie, solitaire, ice cream and a good homemade cobbler. Carey’s greatest love was his family and he thoroughly enjoyed bragging on his family to everyone he came in contact with. Carey’s family was most proud of his recent profession of faith and his decision to join Bethel United Methodist Church.

A service to celebrate and honor Carey’s life will be held Thursday, July 7, at 10 a.m. from Rouse Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Mallie Hinnant officiating. Interment will follow at the Mewborn Family Cemetery.

Carey is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jackie Gray Mewborn; two sons, Junior Mewborn and his companion, Wendy Kearney and Todd Mewborn; three granddaughters, Ashley Bratcher and husband, David, Kristin Mewborn and fiancé, Josh Brown and Caraleigh Mitchell and husband, Ryan; two great-grandchildren, Cohen Bratcher and Conleigh Mitchell; and a sister, Carole McKeel.

Carey’s family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com. Memorials may be made to “Cure For The Colors,” c/o SMOC, 203 Cox Boulevard, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534. Arrangements are entrusted to Rouse Funeral Home, LaGrange.
