GEORGE HENRY SAWYER JR.
George Henry Sawyer Jr., 92, died peacefully Friday, April 29, at his home in Greenville, N.C.
A graveside service will be conducted Friday, May 6, at 12:30 p.m. in Pinewood Memorial Park officiated by the Rev. Patrick Cherry. The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Friday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. prior to the service.
Mr. Sawyer, son of the late George H. Sawyer Sr. and Delia Forbes Sawyer, was a native of Currituck County. During the war he worked at the Coast Guard Station in Elizabeth City, N.C., making airplanes for the war effort. It was here that he met his longtime love and wife, Thelma Brinson Sawyer. After that he had a long time career in the LP gas business.
He worked in Goldsboro with a local gas company as a serviceman and later moved to Greenville into a management position with a regional gas company. He was employed long-term in different positions with this company until his retirement.
George loved Thelma, his wife for 71 years, his family, and cherished visits from all his children and grandchildren. He loved working in the yard, getting out for a car ride, card and board games with grandchildren, fishing with family, and going out to eat. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years, Thelma B. Sawyer.
He is survived by his son, Doug Sawyer and wife, Ginger of Roanoke, Va., daughter, Stephanie Elks and husband, Carlton of Greenville, and son, Rodney Sawyer and wife, Sharon of the Outer Banks, N.C. He has five precious grandchildren, Ashley, Kate, Amanda, Clark and Parker, and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a beloved brother, Raymond Sawyer.
