Clarence Eugene Gleaton Jr., 90, Spring Hope, passed away Monday.
A private service will be conducted at a later time.
Gene served his country with honor and pride as a Marine during World War II in the Pacific Conflict.
He joined the Army, and he served during the Korean War. He became a helicopter pilot, and served in Lebanon and Vietnam.
He felt it was an honor to pilot for the National Geographic crew while it was mapping Antarctica. Gene was rewarded by having Mount Gleaton in Antarctica named after him.
Gene is survived by his wife, Rose Pimpinella Gleaton of Rocky Mount; his daughters, Susan G. Smith and husband, Jackson, of Goldsboro and Karen G. White of Spring Hope; grandson, Alexander McCormick Smith; and great-granddaughter, Alexis Leigh Smith.
