LAURA LEWIS

April 14, 1945-June 21, 2015

Mother Laura Gardner Lewis was born April 14, 1945, to the late Laura Bell and Quincy Gardner Sr.

She left this life to be with the Lord June 21, 2015.

She was preceded in death by her husband, elder Edward E Lewis, and two sisters, Mildred Lewis and Annie Lewis.

Early in life, Laura was given the name "Pug," which she disliked when she was young, but later learned to embrace it as a term of affection.

Laura was reared in a loving home by Christian parents, who loved God. She was taught the love of Christ at an early age, and accepted Christ as her personal savior.

She joined St. Delight United Holy Church in her adolescent years, and her love for her church remained strong until death. As a member of St. Delight, she had served in such capacities as a member of Choir No. 2, chairman of the program committee, member of the Mothers' Board and a member of Liddie Parks Missionary Circle.

Nothing could take the place of the love that she had for her church. One of her strongest desires during her illness was to get to church whenever she could.

Laura received her education from Lenoir County schools. She graduated with the class of 1963 from Frink High School, and was employed as a teacher assistant in the same school system for a number of years.

Later, she sought employment at Princeton Sewing Co. and Howell Intermediate Child Care facility, now known as RHA Howells, in which she retired in 2013 to care for her husband.

In 1963, Laura was introduced to elder Edward E. Lewis by her sister, elder Sallie Hutchins, and a relationship was spun that resulted in holy matrimony March, 16 1964, in the home of her in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. John Wesley Lewis Sr., and to this union, four children were born.

Laura had a love for people that was expressed best by her actions. She was a giver, and she believed that people remember what you do rather than what you say.

She loved her family, and did whatever she could to support them; her grandchildren where the light of her life.

She leaves to cherish her legacy one daughter, Myra Mitchell (Orlando); three sons, Edward E. Lewis Jr. (Tomiko), elder Danny Lewis and elder Tracy Lewis (Teresa) of Goldsboro N.C.; two sisters, elder Lucy Dudley and elder Sallie Hutchins both of LaGrange, N.C.; three brothers, Bishop Quincy Gardner Jr. (Lenora) and James Gardner (Loretta) both of LaGrange, N.C., and Thomas Waters (Dr. Lois) of Goldsboro, N.C.; three sisters-in-law, Hattie Bell Lewis of Kinston, N.C., Elizabeth Lewis of Goldsboro N.C., Geraldine Grady (Steve) of Dudley N.C.; one brother-in-law, Robert Lewis (Evelyn) of Goldsboro, N.C.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four godchildren, elder Christopher Hutchins (Revelene) of Dudley, N.C., Diwanda Hutchins, Deborah Hutchins and Scottie Lewis of Goldsboro, N.C.; and a host nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Love Temple, 201 N. Oak Forest Road, Goldsboro, with elder Devin Pickett officiating. Interment will follow in Old Mill Cemetery, Central Heights Road.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Delights United Holy Church, 976 LaGrange Road, LaGrange, N.C. The family will assemble at 212 Ervin Drive at 1 p.m. in preparation for the procession.

Hamilton Funeral Chapel is serving the family.
