Mary Lib Phillips, of St. Matthews, S.C., died peacefully on May 7, 2015, at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, surrounded by her family and friends. Graveside services will be held on Monday, May 11, 2015, at 11 a.m., at West End Cemetery in St. Matthews, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas B. Huggins Jr. officiating.
Mary Lib was born Dec. 27, 1919, in Lumberton, N.C. She graduated from East Carolina University and taught school for several years. She married C.W. (Bill) Phillips in 1943, and they made St. Matthews their home for most of their married life.
She was a founding member of the Dogwood Club and a member of the William Thompson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She attended the First Baptist Church, Bridge Street, St. Matthews, and was one of its oldest living members.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C. W. (Bill) Phillips, and her grandson, William Howard Phillips. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Winifred and Bob McKellar of Charlotte, N.C., and nieces and nephews; and her children and their spouses, Don and Pam Phillips of St. Matthews, S.C., Patricia and Jeff Covin of Bloomington, Ind., Bill and Robin Phillips of St. Matthews, S.C., Betty Rose and Frederick Robinson of St. Matthews, S.C., and Jeanne Phillips and Bill Pendergraft of Beaufort, S.C.; along with 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family is receiving visitors at her residence in St. Matthews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 348, St. Matthews, S.C. 29135, or to a charity of one's choice.
