GREENVILLE -- Helen Dawson White, 88, passed away at Vidant Medical Center on February 10, 2015.

A memorial service will be held at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at Cypress Glen Retirement Community in the Four Seasons Room from 5:30-7:30 p.m. today. The burial service will be private in Pinewood Memorial Park.

Mrs. White was born on Dec. 10, 1926 in Wayne County and was the daughter of Bill and Maude Dawson. She was a graduate of Eureka High School and a business school in Chapel Hill, N.C. For 55 years, she was married to the late Henry A. White (Alex), comptroller of East Carolina University until his retirement. She is survived by her three daughters, Becky Jones and husband, Gregory, of Belhaven, N.C., Anna Hill of Hartsville, S.C., and Catharine Koonce and husband, David, of Jacksonville, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Greg Jones and wife, Stephanie, Kevin Jones and wife, Jessica, Cara Jones, Scottie Hill and husband, Alex Brito, Becky Hill, Bo Hill, Jack Koonce and Alex Koonce; nine great grandchildren, Dawson, Peyton, Evelyn, Wyatt, Braylon, Carson and Mason Jones and Anna Bec and Trent Hill-Brito; sister, Virginia Chase of Wayne County and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mrs. White, a native of Wayne county, was a long-time resident of Pitt County. She was formerly employed at Hollowell's Drug Store and the Pitt County Board of Elections. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, numerous Bible studies, sang in the choir and was active with Martha's Pantry. She volunteered at the hospital as a waiting room volunteer for many years. For the past 18 years, she resided in the Cypress Glen Community and was instrumental in establishing the gift shop whose profits supported the Cypress Glen Benevolent Fund. She was formerly a member of the Chatham Book Club.

Mrs. White thrived in the Cypress Glen community and enjoyed relationships with both residents and staff members. Helen was noted for her candor and quick wit. She especially enjoyed dining in the Cypress Glenn dining room with her special friends.

Mrs. White was predeceased by her husband, parents, brother, Ray Dawson, sister, Grace Braxton and son-in-law, Trent Hill.
