JAMES L. SASSER

James Linwood Sasser, 84, left this world to be with Jesus Wednesday morning at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

James was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, whose love for life and others was apparent to all who met him.

James was born in Wayne County Jan. 7, 1930, to the late Benjamin Preston Sasser and Lela Frances Sutton Sasser.

He began his career in law enforcement as an officer with the Goldsboro Police Department, and later transferred to the Wayne County Sherriff Department, where he served for 34 years.

For 12 years, James honorably served the citizens of Wayne County as the sheriff. James spent many years fighting for safer schools, neighborhoods and workplaces.

He will always be remembered for his love of a good practical joke, whether done to him or by him, as well as his true love of family, friends, life, work and good music.

James was a member of Selah Christian Church.

A service celebrating James' life will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, 2014, in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Patrick Muston officiating. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, in Falling Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with honors provided by the Wayne County Sheriff Department.

James is survived by his wife of 56 years, Louise Head Sasser; children, Jimmy Sasser and wife, Ann, of Goldsboro, Brenda James and husband, Carlton, of Beulaville and Jay Sasser and wife, Amy, of Goldsboro; brother, Preston C. Sasser of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren, Leslie Sasser Denning and husband, Andrew, Bonnie Sasser, Josh Sasser, Justin James, Lindsay J. Pope and husband, Jason, Jacob Sasser and Aubrey Sasser; and two great-grandchildren, Scarlett Denning and Conner Pope.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Selah Christian Church, c/o Jean Hollowell, 3304 Stevens Mill Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530, or Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and immediately following the service. At other times, the family will be at his home.
