THOMAS W. MERRILL

Retired Technical Sgt. Thomas W. Merrill, 81, Goldsboro, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2014, at the home of his daughter.
Thomas was born July 20, 1933, in Owego, N.Y., to the late Walter Scott and Edna Pearl Bedford Merrill.
A United States Air Force veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, he enlisted in the military June 25, 1951.
Thomas, his wife and their children spent his military career seeing many changes of duty stations. He retired after 20 years of service to his country June 30, 1971.
After his military retirement, he started his second career as a truck driver, retiring in October 2010.
Thomas was a member of Park East Church of God, where he enjoyed singing in the choir.
He was a member of the NRA and American Legion and a lifetime member of the VFW, North American Fishing Club and 49th Fighter Bomber Wing.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with pastor Wesley Jarman and pastor Danny Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with military honors.
Thomas was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Lucille Rose Wood Merrill.
He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Alleman and husband, Tim; his daughter, Lori Melvin; and his son, Thomas Merrill II all of Goldsboro.
He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Doug Newell and wife, Kristi, of South Boston, Va., Brandon LeClerc, Steven Newell and wife, Ashley, Christopher Newell, Sara Alleman, Matthew Alleman and Amanda Rupert all of Goldsboro.
Thomas is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, as well as his brother, Kenneth Merrill of Astoria, Ore.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
