Matthew Arnold Smith, 83, Pikeville, passed away Thursday night, Aug. 28, 2014, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.
A native of Wayne County, he was the son of the late Matthew and Sallie Hardison Smith, and was married to the late Edna Vandiford Smith.
Mr. Smith was retired from Best Distributing Co. after 41 years of service.
He was a member of Faro Chapel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, and proudly served his country in the United States Army.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service to celebrate his life at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with pastor Don Sauls officiating. Burial will follow in Eureka Cemetery.
Survivors include his son, Michael Smith and wife, Janet, of Pikeville; brothers, John Robert Smith of Chesapeake, Va., and Clifton Brantley Smith of Clayton; three grandchildren, Greg Smith and wife, Jessica, Cheri Dowdy and husband, Walt, and Tony Smith and wife, Brittany; and six great-grandchildren, Ethan, Caleb, Elena, Haven and Ellie Dowdy and Madilynn Smith.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his son, Billy Ray Smith; sister, Betty Davis; and brother, Charles Smith.
