Robert Taylor Hayes, 85, passed away Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014, at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.
Robert was born in Rockingham County May 21, 1929, to the late William Thomas and Rilla Proctor Hayes.
He proudly served his country in both the United States Navy and the United States Air Force.
Robert was married to the late Yukie Wakayama Hayes.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014, from 1 to 2 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Terry Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with military honors.
Robert is survived his daughters, Shirley Hayes Ross and husband, Robert, of Isle of Palms, S.C., Mickie Hayes Wiltz and husband, Ryan, of Oak Grove, Wisc., and June Hayes of Goldsboro; sons, Robert T. Hayes Jr. and wife, Sue, of Yorktown, Va., and William Thomas Hayes of Goldsboro; granddaughters, Shelley Hayes Clark, Karen Ann Hayes, Hailey Elizabeth Ross and Victoria Spencer; grandsons, T.J. Spencer, Damien Spencer and Robert Ross III; and great-granddaughter, Meghan Grace Mangrum.
The Hayes family would like to give a special thanks to all the staff in the ICU Unit of Wayne Memorial Hospital and his homecare hospice nurse, Sylvia Lewis, for the care and compassion that was shown to Robert and his family during his sickness.
The family would also like to express its thanks to his son, William, for being a wonderful caretaker for his dad over the last several years.
