DOROTHY THORN GARDNER

Dorothy Thorn Gardner, 78, Pikeville, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2014, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by her family.
Dorothy was born in Geneva County, Ala., Jan. 25, 1936, to the late Aaron and Rosie Mae Wise Thorn. She was married to the late James Edward "Hoss" Gardner.
For many years, Dorothy delivered newspapers for the Goldsboro News-Argus for 46 years.
She was a longtime member of Free Chapel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, and was involved in many activities, where she utilized her gifts and abilities to share the love of God.
Dorothy was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She will always be loved by her children, and will be greatly missed by those who knew her.
A service celebrating Dorothy's life will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at Free Chapel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jimmy Forehand, the Rev. Dock Hobbs and the Rev. Reynolds Smith officiating. Interment will be Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at 11 a.m. in Pikeville Cemetery.
Dorothy is survived by her sons, Carlo Gardner of Pikeville and Joey Gardner and wife, Cathy, of Pikeville; daughter, Tammy Gardner of Goldsboro; sister, Lena Flowers and husband, Earl, of Panama City, Fla.; brothers, Gale Thorn and wife, Kathleen, of Kinston, Ala., and Wayne Thorn and wife, Shirley, of Coffee Springs, Ala.; grandchildren, Christy Gardner, Justin Gardner and wife, Natalie, Derek Hill and wife, Brittney, and Kylie Hill; and a great-grandchildren, Alysa Craft, Annalyn Gardner and Easton Glen Hill.
She is also survived by her stepdaughter, Ashlee Allen and husband, Jacob; best friend, Shirley Gardner of Goldsboro; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Brandon Jennette.
The family would like to express its appreciation for the compassionate care provided by ICU staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital and the staff at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be given to Free Chapel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, 3302 N.C. 111 North, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
The family will receive friends Tuesday following the service at the church, and other times at the home of Carlo Gardner, 425 Hoss Lane, Pikeville.
