ANDREW EARL SMITH

Andrew Earl Smith, 83, Pikeville, passed away Monday, May 12, 2014, at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.
Andrew was born in Wayne County July 17, 1930, the fourth child of 13 children, to the late George and Elgie Radford Smith.
He was a retired farmer, and later became a police sergeant in Pikeville, where he retired with 23 years of service.
Andrew also worked as a painter and manager of the Mobil Gas Station in Pikeville, and was a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service.
In later years, he worked as a meat cutter with Howell Brothers in Pikeville.
Andrew was a member of Living Waters Ministries.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. Michael Lewis and the Rev. Tom Dorman officiating. Interment will follow in Pikeville Cemetery.
Andrew is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bessie Bedford Smith.
He was preceded in death by his son, Danny Earl Smith, and is survived by his daughters, Phyllis S. Candler and husband, Bardo, of Goldsboro, LaRue S. Taylor and husband, Johnny, of Pikeville and Robin S. Sutton and husband, Curtis, of LaGrange; four grandchildren, Stacy Candler and wife, Lisa, Dawn Vernatt and fiancé, Phil Scarboro Jr., Dillon Fleming and wife, Elizabeth, and DeAnna Gray and husband, Jason; and three great-grandchildren, Avery Vernatt, Jason Vernatt and Rylee Fleming.
He is also survived by his sisters, Viola S. Lucas of Fremont, Linda S. Vick of Kenly and Juanita S. Strickland of Rocky Mount, and brothers, Roy Smith of Pikeville and Kenneth Smith of Goldsboro.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Ted Fleming.
The family will receive friends Thursday, May 15, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and other times at his home in Pikeville.
