REV. JAMES MCCANDLESS

The Rev. James McCandless, 92, went to be with his heavenly father Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.
Rev. McCandless was born Jan. 22, 1921, in Wayne County to the late Jim and Betty Scott McCandless.
He attended Pikeville High School, and completed several off-campus courses through North Carolina State University, as well as church-related courses.
In 1948, Rev. McCandless felt the call to enter the gospel ministry, and was ordained Aug. 22, 1953.
He faithfully served as pastor of 10 Pentecostal Holiness churches in Eastern North Carolina.
Rev. McCandless also did the work of a carpenter contractor, and because of his knowledge and experience, was asked to teach vocational training in this field in Craven County Schools for 10 years.
For those who knew him, Rev. McCandless will be remembered by his charm, quick wit and his smile. He will be missed by many.
A service to celebrate Rev. McCandless' service to the Lord will be Friday at 11 a.m. at The First Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Bill Rose, bishop Jim Whitfield and the Rev. Jim Forehand officiating. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Holly Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery in Vanceboro.
Rev. McCandless is survived by his wife of 25 years, Sudie Gray McCandless; his daughters, Deanna Taylor and husband, Harry, of Sea Level, Pat Whiting and husband, Bruce, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Paulette Mayo of Kinston; and his sons, Lynwood McCandless and wife, Joyce, of New Bern, Phillip McCandless and wife, Sandra, of Vanceboro and Mark McCandless and wife, Delane of Knoxville, Tenn.
He is also survived by his sister, Ruby Cooke; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, Rev. McCandless was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Pauline Gardner McCandless; his daughter, Becky Deal; his sisters, Agnes Smith and Sudie Merritt; and his brothers, Thomas McCandless and Johnny McCandless.
Although flowers are welcome, memorials may be made to The First Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1100 The First Church Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at The First Church, and at other times, at the residence.
For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
