MOUNT OLIVE -- Harold Gray Jones, 85, passed away Saturday evening, May 4, 2013, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Mr. Jones, a native of Smith Chapel community west of Mount Olive, was the son of the late Ennis and Georgia Taylor Jones.

His working career began with Dewey Brothers, followed by Retail Credit, but when he established himself with Nationwide Insurance Co. in 1955, he enjoyed a 32-year long association with the company, serving as agent, then district manager, and retiring as financial plans advisor.

Due to the mandates of his career, he and his family lived in Rocky Mount, Columbia, S.C. , Rock Hill, S.C., and it was while in New Bern that he retired. His later years were spent back in Mount Olive.

He was a member of Smith Chapel United Methodist Church and Mount Olive Lion's Club, and had been an original member of Goldsboro Volunteer Rescue Squad.

His first wife and the mother of his children, Dorothy Outlaw Jones, a native of Outlaw's Bridge community, preceded him in death, as did his parents and an infant daughter, Elaine Jones, who died at birth.

He is survived by his wife, Jessie Rose Odom Waller Jones; his son, Gary H. Jones of New Bern; a sister, Faye Jones Harrell of Goldsboro; three brothers, Clarence Jones of Goldsboro, Oscar T. Jones and wife, Lamai, of Cary and James H. Jones and wife, Kathy, of Goldsboro; several nieces and nephews; and two stepchildren, Donna Waller Fulghum and husband, David, and Joe Dan Waller and wife, Karen, all of Mount Olive, along with their families.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 7, at 7 p.m. at Smith Chapel United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Leland Heath, and followed by visitation in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be Wednesday, May 8, at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park, with words of committal by the Rev. Uiyeon Kim.
